Another Auld Lang Syne

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

That week between Christmas and New Year’s is typically quiet — half the staff is on vacation, the telephones are quiet, clients are stuck in snow storms in Manhattan. I am in the office this week to finish up some projects, cover for vacationing employees and attend to any end of year ‘closing of the books’ needs. I also have a minute or two for reflection.

I reflect on the year now winding down, and ponder what is to come. How was 2010? Despite continuing stories of economic stress, Digital Research has had much to celebrate. Sales were strong. We brought on more new clients this year than we have in recent memory. We continued to work with the clients who we love and have gotten to know and appreciate over the years. AUGUSTA Maine officials say summer tourism was up significantly over last year.

Data collected by Davidson-Peterson Associates, a travel and tourism research firm in Kennebunk that represents the Office of Tourism, says an estimated 13.7 million day travelers and an additional estimated 9.5 million overnight travelers visited Maine during the summer of 2010.

That marks an increase in day visitation of 8 percent over the summer of 2009, with overnight visitation up 14 percent over a year ago.

Officials say tourism generates approximately $8 billion in sales of goods and services and contributes more than $400 million in state and local tax revenue.
